How quickly things can change in the world of high school football. The big area news was that Lord Botetourt RB/LB 10 Hunter Rice went down early with an ankle injury in the opener with Brookville. Coach Jamie Harless and his troops pulled out the win 15-9 in a hotly contested battle, but the question is how hurt is Rice? Senior RB/DB 4 Evan Ellers came in and came on, along with his teammates to eek out the nailbiter.

Around the area, other games of interest: Salem Coach Don Holter put a “W” in the win column in his first game as the Spartans head man beating Amherst 48-20. Amherst is now led by the legendary Bob Christmas, formerly of Jefferson Forest. William Byrd’s new head coach, Brad Lutz notched his first Terrier victory with a 42-21 win over Cave Spring. William Fleming pounded Harrisonburg 52-10 to start Coach Lovelace’s second year off right. Vance NC beat Heritage 35-7. Pulaski County blanked Northside 14-0 in a slugfest. Galax outlasted Glenvar 32-29 in their typical early season ‘playoff-type’ battle. Hidden Valley got the better of Patrick Henry 42-35, . EC Glass waxed Charlottesville 58-0. In the New River Valley Christiansburg broke open a close game with Floyd County outdistancing the Buffaloes 35-16, and Radford bested George Wythe 45-23.
