The Abingdon Falcons made some history for the school making it to the State Semi Finals for the first time since they moved up to 3A. It wasn’t easy getting there. They had to beat the last two schools to win 3A state championships – Cave Spring (2019) and Northside (2018). Northside was the latest victim, falling 72-59. Senior Falcon guard 3 Jake Thacker was the big difference maker this past Saturday night with a game high 27 points, including five from long distance. Northside was led by Junior G/F 10 Ayrion Journiette with 26 points. Abingdon will now take on Liberty Christian Academy at home.

The third time was a charm for the Patrick Henry Patriots when they took on their cross town rival the William Fleming Colonels. But it was more than just a charm they were playing for. This game was for the 5D Regional Crown. The clash lived up to it’s history. It was a battle that would not be decided until the last second of the game. Or to be more exact, till the last .3 second of the game. At the heart of the ending was a controversial foul call and ensuing foul shot. There was contact, but a question as to whether the final horn had already sounded. Regardless, Sophomore sharp shooter Brooks Derey decided it at the line, making the first and missing the second on purpose. The Colonels were led by C. J. Goode with 20pts, Elijah Mitchell chipped in 15, Jaron Walker and Malachi Jackson had 9 and 8 respectively. The Pats were led by Jamonte “Bird” Smith with 20pts, Jack Faulkner with 18pts, Brooks Derey 12pts and Abu Yarmon added 11.
