Floyd County pitches a shutout in 20-0 win over Patrick County

Patrick County High School, Stuart, Va. – On Patrick County’s first drive of the game, the dye was cast. The Cougars faced a fourth and one at their own twenty-six. Patrick County put the ball in the hands of their big, 6’1, 240 pound running back 24 Dae shawn Penn. The Buffalo’s stuffed the run for no gain and took over on downs. That didn’t lead to points but it definitely led to a message sent by Coach Winfred Beale’s Floyd County team. We are not going to be pushed around. If anyone did the pushing, it was the Buffaloes. Senior QB 10 Avery Chaffin found WR 4 Jaden Brewer in the left front corner of the end zone on a 4-yard toss to give Floyd County a lead that they would never give up. Floyd went on to score on the first two drives of the second half to give themselves all the cushion they would need. The Buffalo’s defense made sure of that, forcing six Cougar punts on ten Patrick County possessions the night. Three other times the Buffalo defense held the Cougars short on fourth down plays.

RB/LB/KR 30 Jacob Robertson returned a punt forty one yards to ‘the house’ to round out the scoring. Defensively the Green Wave was just as dominant, blanking the visiting Knights.

First Quarter – The first quarter had Floyd County’s defense on display. Patrick County got the ball first and worked their way into fourth and short situations deep in their own territory.

DB/QB 10 Avery Chaffin and the rest of the Floyd County defense join together to get a stop on fourth down

Both times the Buffaloes stuffed the run and turned the Cougars over on downs. Neither fourth down stop led to points but they did dictate field position. Eventually the Buffs got the ball with a short field and made it count.

Second Quarter – On their third series, starting at their own forty-seven, it took Coach Winfred Beale’s team only eight plays to dent the scoreboard. QB 10 Avery Chaffin did the honors with a 4-yard pass to WR/DB/P 4 Jaden Brewer in the front left corner of the end zone.

Floyd County WR/DB 4 Jaden Brewer makes the TD catch in tight coverage

The scorebook says a four yard TD pass but Chaffin threw it probably 20-yards for the score. Brewer made the grab with DB 15 Michael Hamm in good defensive position, but Brewer used his 6’3” frame to make the play. Floyd County led 7-0 with K/RB/LB 44 Mason Keith’s point after.

Floyd County’s defense stood tall on Thursday night against the Cougars

The Floyd County defense was really the star of the first half and possibly the game. The Buffalo defense held the ‘run minded’ Cougars to only 38-yards in the first half, and 114 total yards on the night.

The Senior put a bow on it with the extra point kick and Narrows led 14-0.  Following RB 30 Robertson’s run, Narrows created a storm of their own opting for an onside kick.  K 30 Robertson kicked and recovered after the ball went the required ten yards.

Buffalo DL/OL 64 Shane Monk quickly sheds his block and lowers the boom on Patrick County RB 33 Carson Merriman

Symbolic of that effort was a big hit by DL 64 Shane Monk on RB 33 Carson Merriman on a third and eight on Patrick County’s fourth series. Monk beat his block quickly, and nearly stepped into the hand off as he delivered a big blow. DE 40 Kaiden Swortzel ended the last two first half Cougar drives with sacks. DE/TE 40 Swortzel, only a Sophomore, spent some time in Patrick County’s backfield harassing the Cougar quarterback.

Third Quarter – The third quarter was all about Floyd County’s offense. Coach Beales’ Buffaloes came out and put two scores on the Cougars to put too much distance between the two on this night. The back to back touchdowns were both 1-yard runs by the two Floyd County quarterbacks, QB/DB 10 Avery Chaffin and QB/DB 3 Jared Nichols.

The big play sitting up the first score was QB 10 Chaffin toss to WR/DB 42 Seth Dunbar for twenty seven yards down to the Cougar four. The second TD was marked by a 36-yard run by QB/DB 3 Nichols from midfield down to the fourteen. Two plays later QB/DB 10 Chaffin hit WR/DB 42 Dunbar for eleven yards down to the two.

WR/DB 42 Seth Dunbar has been a key receiver for the Buffs all year long

Fourth Quarter – The fourth quarter was only three drives, two by Patrick County. None of them produced any points. Floyd County DB/Wr 1 Luke Phillips intercepted Cougar QB 46 Demontez Hill only to be stripped of the ball which Patrick Co’s RB/LB 34 Ben Hylton briefly recovered, only to lose it back to Floyd County.                               – Cap’n Crunch
