Glenvar-James River battle elements, each other in 19-0 contest
Highlander Stadium, Glenvar, VA – Rainy conditions can change the game of football significantly and that can’t be overstated in last Friday’s match-up between the Glenvar Highlanders and James River Knights. The stormy weather upped the challenge with each team’s passing game. In fact, both programs combined for a mere 34 passing yards on 21 pass attempts over the course of the game. The ground game didn’t pack the sheet either due to both team’s stellar defenses, but the Highlander backs executed when the game was on the line. None more so than RB 1 Jackson Swanson. After the HighlanderRB 24 Elijah Carter went out in the first quarter after picking up 53 yards, the Senior scored two of Glenvar’s three TD’s. The second score was the play of the night with “Number 1” threading together several hesitation jukes on his way to the house. “It all started up front with our line,” Swanson emphasized, “they paved the way, all the props should go to them.” The Knights main option was RB 7 Conner Church who picked up 52 of the Knight’s 78 rushing yards. Despite he and his team’s best efforts, Glenvar’s dark green wall of a defensive line proved too much for the Knight’s. James River’s Coach Jennings focused on the positives, “Our defense played lights out for four quarters, offensively we couldn’t get anything going. Hats off to coach Clifford and their defense… they’re always really tough.” Coach Clifford was proud of his squad for grinding it out in a rivalry game, “We knew it’d be tough, a scrappy group… we limited our mistakes, (and) our turnovers and I’m just proud of the way we gutted it out.”
