Highlanders take to the air, advance with 49-14 win over Buffaloes
Highlander Stadium, Roanoke County, VA – The Crunch Roanoke Game of the Week took us to Highlander Stadium as the Floyd County Buffaloes traveled down the mountain to take on the Glenvar Highlanders. The first round Group 2 Region C VHSL playoff game was played on Thursday in an attempt to beat the rain forecasted for Friday night. These Three Rivers District foes had played 5 weeks earlier in Floyd where the Buffaloes won in triple OT by the score of 33-27. This time, the anticipated re-match between the two 7-3 teams was a one-sided affair. The Highlanders’ offensive and defensive squads put on dominating performances and Glenvar jumped out to a 35-0 lead before the Buffaloes got on the board. The Highlanders quite frankly buffaloed the Buffaloes who were unable to get any offense going and were not able to stop Glenvars’ quick strike passing attack. The Highlanders first 4 touchdowns were on drives of 3 plays or less. Glenvar freshman QB 15 Brody Dawyot completed 17/19 passes for 243 yards including 6 touchdown tosses. Dawyot connected with three of his senior wide receivers in totaling his 6 scores through the air – 3 to Gabe Ford, 2 to Nick Woodson and 1 to Jackson Swanson. On top of those gaudy passing numbers, he also rushed for 55 yards. The Highlander defense, not to be outdone, turned in quite a showing themselves. They held Floyd County to 85 total yards on offense, 60 on the ground and 25 through the air. They forced 5 punts, came up with a stop on 4th down and had an interception. In the end, Glenvar claimed the 49-14 playoff victory and will start getting ready for their second round matchup against the Martinsville Bulldogs next Friday night. – T-Mac
