Big second half propels
Patrick Henry past Briar Woods 28-14

Merrill Gainer Field, Roanoke, VA – Coming off a big win against Salem last week, the Patriots were looking unstoppable entering their first postseason game against Briar Woods. Sure enough, two minutes into the first, PH got the party started with RB 5 Chuck Webb crossing the goal line. But the Falcons were unfazed. The momentum shifted at the tail end of the first quarter when Briar Woods DE 55 Stephen Wyviorka picked off Patriot QB 12 Joseph Beasley’s pass on a WR screen. The Falcons rode that momentum, scoring immediately off a 42- yard bomb from QB 1 Brady Carmical to WR 2 Golin Capistrant. The visitors added another TD with seconds left in the half. Falcon RB 14 Andrew Joyce put Briar Woods up 14-7 going into the break. However, this is a Patrick Henry squad that’s been overcoming adversity all season and they weren’t going to stop now. “Our backs were against the wall,” said Patriot QB/WR/DB 10 Sidney Webb, “we had to go make a play, so why not go out and do it myself.” That moment came after a 14 play Falcon drive. As Carmical heaved a pass into the end zone, Webb launched into the lane, intercepting the would-be Briar Woods TD, thus turning the tide of the game. Sid Webb wasn’t done yet. The senior stepped in as QB, leading the Patriots 80 yards culminating in a TD pass to WR 4 Isaiah Swain. That made it 14-13, after PH’s point after was blocked. The Patriots followed that score up with another TD. This time is was WR/DB 2 Carmelo Taylor taking it to the ‘house.’ RB/WR/DB 7 Jahzae Kimbrough caught the 2 point pass and PH was up 21-14. Kimbrough added the final TD on a long run and finally, Coach Fiddler was happy. Talking about Sidney Webb, the coach said, “I wanted to see if he’d give us a spark [in the 2nd half]. The interception was huge… He went out and got it done for us.”
