Cave Spring’s into action in 38-7 River Ridge District win over Blacksburg

Former Cave Spring Knight player was recognized at the game as a recently inducted NFL Hall of Famer

Dwight Bogle Field, Roanoke, VA – Cave Spring brought a physical type of play to their 38-7 Homecoming win over Blacksburg. It was a hard-hitting Knight approach that made the difference according to Cave Spring Coach Hunter Shepherd, “We are physical. That’s a big thing we do and one of the things I want to bring here, and the culture we want to set for the future.”

DL 70 Preston Lonker was a force in the interior of the line often being double teamed and still disrupting play. Shepherd praised his Senior lineman, “He’s hard nosed. He’s a great kid, does all the right things, works in the offseason, and it’s really starting to show.” Blacksburg got the ball first and moved it into Cave Spring territory, but on fourth and one RB 24 Jared Bradly was stuffed. The Knights turned that stop in points. QB 6 Garrett Lonker found WR 14 Kam Gerolds on a fifteen yard toss and run.

After holding the Bruins on their second possession, Cave added a K 51 Oliver Layell 22-yard boot, 10-0 Cave. An interception by DB 16 James Murphy, the first of two on the night, gave Cave the ball back on the Bruin thirty-six. It took two plays for QB 6 Lonker to find WR 20 Owen Sweeney for a 16-yard catch and run for six points. The Senior would add another scoring grab at the 4:24 mark to put the Knights up 24-0 at the half way point.

Cave added two more TDs on their first two second half drives. QB 6 Lonker hit TE 9 Kent Ray for 15 yards for one TD and RB 15 Mo Tolliver (13/119,TD) scored from 15 yards. Blacksburg’s best option on the night was through the air. QB 9 Ethan Karpa (8/14,101,2INTs) had the most success with WR 1 Javier Waldron (4/56). Bruin RB 21 Isaiah Lewis scored the Bruins only TD on a 3-yard run with 2:49 left in the game. – Cap’n Crunch
