Raider’s show ‘Hart’ as Sophomore gets big interception; returns kick for a TD

Blue Ridge School, Saint George, VA – Blue Ridge was strong, but North Cross was stronger. The Barons started strong, mixing in three different QB’s and took a 8-0 lead in the first quarter on a 28-yard toss and catch from QB 6 Paul Kloberdanz to WR/QB 14 D’Myo Hunter in the back of the end zone. After a fake PAT and a completion from QB 15 Noah Anderson to WR 88 Leonardo Figueroa Torres with 2:25 left in the quarter, the Barons led 8-0.

North Cross narrowed that margin with a tough, 4-yard TD run by RB 4 Kam Johnson (21/189,2TDs) up the middle. That was set up by a 33-yard strike from Raider QB 11 Brock Miles to WR/DB 1 Jaziel Hart.

The PAT made it 8-7. In the third quarter, the Baron’s used a turnover on a punt to set up their next score. QB 14 Hunter, a good runner, knifed his way into the end zone on a fourth and goal, a 10-yard run at the 8:17 mark. That stretched Blue Ridge’s lead to 15-7.

That didn’t last long though, as Sophomore WR/DB 1 Ja’ziel Hart took the ensuing kickoff back to the ‘house’ on a 85-yard dart up. K/WR/LB 21 Daniel Skoog’s point after brought it back to a point difference, 15-14. In the final stanza Coach Shannon Taylor’s Raiders raised the ante.

With a heavy dose of RB 4 Johnson, the Raiders capped off an 8-play drive with ‘tiny tank’ scoring on a 30-yard TD run with nearly eight minutes left. Raiders Coach Shannon Taylor was pleased with his team’s play, “we wore them down with our run game, (and) our two-headed monster at the QB position. (QB 6) Tristan (Lange) opened it up running inside and out and (QB 11) Brock (Miles) completed some passes. And then our running backs, Thunder and Lightning – (RB 4) Kam Johnson and (RB 2) Jerel Rhodes.”

North Cross capped off the hot day with a 22-yard field goal by K/WR/LB 21 Skoog. Taylor told his team afterwards, “we weathered the storm, stayed focused…we are road warriors.” That they are. – Cap’n Crunch
