Hilltoppers step on the gas in the second half in 48-14 win over Brookville
Bunker Hill Field, Lynchburg, VA – The EC Glass Hilltoppers and the Brookville Bees know each other very well. The two Seminole District foes have had their battles over the years.
Brookville kept this one close in the first half, but too many Hilltoppers weapons in the second half were the difference in the 48-14 EC Glass win. Hilltopper Head Coach Jamar Lovelace got his team’s attention at the break, “(it was) a very close first half. We had to match their physicality. We made some mistakes and they capitalized on them. We had a little come-to-Jesus meeting in the locker room at half time (and) we came out and played a whole lot better in the second half.”
Brookville broke the ice on the scoreboard on their first possession after WR/DB/KR 6 Alfonzo Jennings returned the opening kickoff 46 yards to Glass fourteen. Two plays later, FB/DL 8 Micah Pennix (10/28,TD) bulled in for the score from the four. RB 1 Jor’Dyn Whitelaw (17/80, 2ptr) ran in the two pointer and the Bees led 8-0. It took EC Glass only four plays to tighten the margin. RB/LB 2 Michael Thomas (10/92,2TDs) scored from 15-yards out. It looked like the Senior would be forced out of bounds at the ten, but he cut back and powered his way for six. “(RB 2 Michael Thomas) He’s our heart beat. I think every coach in the District knows how important he is to us,” Coach Lovelace remarked.
Glass pulled ahead 21-8 but the Bees scored right before half on a 14-yard pass from QB 7 Lincoln McDaniel to WR 14 Landon Brown, to cut it to 21-14 The second half was all Glass as they scored on their first four possessions, two runs and two passes to four different players. That, and they held the Bees scoreless.
Coach Lovelace summed it up, “We spread the ball around so much, that makes us unpredictable, and that’s what we want.” – Cap’n Crunch
