Maroon Tide takes the wind out of the Blue Tornadoes in 42-7 victory
Galax High School, Galax, VA – The Maroon Tide came in on the Richland Tornadoes Friday night in Galax with the Tide swimming away with a 42-7 victory.
Galax kept to the ground early testing Richlands defensive front. Coach Shane Allen raised the bar on his offensive lines expectation from the week prior, “I really challenged our line this week and I think they really answered the bell.” Also answering the bell in a big way was Senior RB 9 Tedruhn Tucker who finished the night with 30 carries for 181 yards and 4 touchdowns.
He ran over, through, and around Tornado defenders in route to the big offensive night. But it was on defense where he got the home crowd to their feet. With Galax up 14-7 and only :24 seconds left in the half. Tucker broke thru the line on defense t the Richlands twenty, deflected Tornado QB 14 Andrew Boyd’s pass high into they air, then made a diving interception at the thirteen.
It took Galax one play, a Tucker run up the middle to add to their lead, 21-7, with on :01 second left on the clock. Coach Allen was impressed, “…a heckuva a play, …tipped the ball (and got the interception). He’s a football player, so valuable to our team.”
Richlands had tied the affair with a QB 14 Boyd to WR/LB 17 Collin Adkins swing pass, that the Sophomore speedster took the distance, 81-yards, in the second quarter. Galax QB 3 Tommy Jones answered that on the Tide’s next drive with 6-yard run of his own, finishing off a 50-yard, 8 play drive with :24 left until the break.
That set up Tucker’s “tipped-get-INT.” Galax would add three more second half scores to provide the final margin. Freshman RB 1 Kayson Saunders had a 2-yard run, and Tucker got that last two, both from 6-yards out. – Cap’n Crunch
