Big plays aid Lord Botetourt in getting the 48-21 win over Northside at home
Lord Botetourt High School, Daleville, VA – When Lord Botetourt and Northside get together the sparks fly. No surprise in this one as the Cavaliers ignited quickly. Botetourt put together a 9 play drive ending with QB 7 Jakari Nicely finding pay dirt. LB struck again a few series later when a Viking snap on a punt went over the punters head and was eventually recovered in the end zone by WR/LB 9 Cody McConnaughey. That put the Cavs up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Viking QB 2 Angel Rigney got Northside on the board with a strike to WR 23 Ryder Workman in the back corner of the end zone to make it 14-7. Botetourt always seem to have an answer though. RB 10 Tristan Overbay got loose for 64 yards on the second play of the Cavs next possession taking the ball down to the Viking four yard line. Nicely put a bow on that on a strong run up the middle. Again the Cavs stretched their lead to two touchdowns, 21-7. LB added one more score before the half to make it 28-7 at the break. This time it was a Nicely to Overbay 15 yard touchdown pass. RB 10 Mykell Harvey gave the Viking faithful some hope on the first play of the second half, darting 72 yards to the “house.” But Botetourt had an answer. Nicely found McConnaughey on a 19-yard touchdown extending the home team’s lead to 35-14. The “Nicely to McConnaughey” connection struck again.
This time for 64 yards for his third TD of the night. Botetourt Senior RB 4 Sam Grooten also got into the scoring act with a TD run of his own to make it 48-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Northside finished off the night’s scoring when Harvey put his speed on display one more time for the Vikings, taking it in from 54 yards. That got us to our final margin, Botetourt 48-21. – Dylan James
