VHSL D4 Playoffs – Round 1
Jefferson Forest powers past GW Danville 20-13 in round one of the playoffs
Sabre Stadium, Forest, VA – A good first round matchup doesn’t always happen early in the playoffs, but the Jefferson Forest – GW Danville game proved it happens sometimes. JF opened up the game with a patented 13 play drive. But the Eagles forced a 30-yard field goal by Junior K 37 Cameron McClendon putting the Cavs up 3-0. JF has made a living off of eating up clock and producing points.
By the time GW got the ball there was 4:07 left in the quarter. From there it turned into a defensive struggle with each side stopping each other and forcing punts. Cavalier DB/RB 3 Cam Parker made the big play with a ‘pick six’ putting the home team up 10-0. That’s how it would stand going into halftime. Forest’s McClendon added another field goal to go up 13-0 in the third. The Eagles would finally produce some points on an 18-yard run by RB 14 Jaden Glenn. The drive only took four plays and GW had some life. The PAT was missed and JF’s lead was 13-6. Cav QB 19 Josiah Bell opened up the fourth quarter with a 21-yard run up the middle to make it 20-6. At 6’4”, 220 lbs, Bell is not an easy guy to bring down. The Eagles would strike back fast with another 4 play drive. This time it was RB 4 Elijah Bridges punching it in from 3-yards out. The point after got it back to a one score game, 20-13. But that’s as close as it would get. The Cav offense kept the sticks and the clock moving, punching their ticket to the second round of the playoffs. Next Friday they will play a familiar foe in EC Glass, a team they beat 23-0 earlier in the year. Glass moved past Sherando 38-30. – Dylan James
