Spartans trio too much for Lady Hilltoppers in 49-35 win in Salem
Salem High School, Salem , Va – The Spartans moved their record to 13-1 with a sound defeat tonight of the EC Glass Lady Hilltoppers (6-7) 49-35 in Salem. This was their second meeting. The Spartans beat the Midtown Girls 60-33 in early December.
Salem was led by their trio of sensational Sophomores – G 4 Gabby Crawley (14 pts), F 15 Bailey Rider (17 pts), and Center 20 Emme Custer (13 pts).
The Lady Hilltoppers, despite the pressure, kept the game close, down only 24-21 at the half. But Salem just keeps coming at you. The Spartans outscored Glass 17-7 in the third quarter.
Salem Head Coach Scott Jester used a full court 1-2-1-1 airplane press to fluster the Hilltoppers all night. If Glass beat the press, Salem dropped into a staunch 2-3 zone, pressuring the ball, and sealing off the inside for the boards. Glass didn’t get many second chances.
EC Glass was led by Junior G 2 Amia Powell with 10 points and Freshman G 24 N’Niya McCoy who carded 8.
Both teams will be back in action this Friday. Salem will face Cave Spring at home, while EC Glass entertains Rustburg.
