Auburn makes it four straight with a four OT, 54-52 win on a jumper by Millirons
Region 1D Championship, Cassell Coliseum, Blacksburg, VA– It was a wild one in Blacksburg Saturday night between Auburn and George Wythe. It took four overtimes for the Eagles to get another close win, 54-52, over the Maroons. Auburn ( has beaten Wythe four times this year by an average of four points a game. And to top it off, they both move on to the state tournament, so there is a chance they could meet again.
The man of the night was G 23 Nick Millirons, who finished with 30 points on a 12/17 shooting night. When the Eagles needed a bucket, you knew Auburn Head Coach Terry Millirons would trust his son with the ball. It took four overtimes to get into a situation for the younger Millirons to have a chance to win it, and he didn’t disappoint the Auburn faithful. He made his way to the top of the paint and drained the 16 footer with :05 left. G 3 Drew Royal chipped in with 10 points for the Eagles.
For George Wythe (19-7, 12-3 Mtn Empire), they run everyone at you. G/F 10 David Goode was the man this night for the Maroons. He finished with a team high 21 points. After a collision under the bucket later in the game, Goode had to play with cotton up one side of his nose to stop the bleeding. Auburn led, albeit by a slim margin, at every quarter break. The Eagles were up 16-14 after one, 26-24 at the half, and 38-37 at the end of the third. At the end of regulation it was finally tied at 48.
At the end of the game and in the overtimes, Wythe Head Coach Tony Dunford opted to hold the ball for essentially a last shot. They spread the court, only take their chance at a drive to the rim. At the end of regulation, Goode’s drive to the bucket went in and then out. In the first OT, Goode slipped on a drive, and Millirons picked up the loose ball. He had a shot from half court for the win but it sailed wide. Back and forth it went, leading up to MIllirons heroics.
