2024 Group 2A Boys Soccer State Championship
Glenvar makes it four in a row in 1-0 win over Radford in the State Championship
2A Boys Soccer State Championship, Salem HS, Salem, VA– The Glenvar Highlander Boy’s Soccer team made it back to back state championships on Saturday finishing the season undefeated, 22-0. They won the state final winning for the fourth time over the second best team in state 2A soccer, no doubt. As a matter of fact, if you take away Glenvar’s wins over Radford, then the Bobcats would have been undefeated as well. That’s how good these two squads were this year. The Three River District rivals squared off twice during the regular season, once in the playoffs, and then Saturday in the state championship. Each time the Bobcats tightened the margin 3-0, 2-0, 1-0, and then 1-0, but Glenvar had what it took each time to get the “W.”
The winning goal this day came off the right foot of Senior Forward 15 Bryce King with about a minute left in the first half. Radford Goalie 0 Charlie Davis attacked the ball from the goal, but King slid it by the Senior in the left corner of the goal. It was a bang-bang play, and the difference between goal and deflection was inches.
That was all that was needed to get the win. Radford started off aggressively getting a few early shots on goal, but with no success. Highlander Goalie 1 Grayson Shepherd locked down that end of the pitch. Glenvar settled down on offense and also had their shots, but for the most part Keeper 0 Davis controlled the box. The second half was a defensive stalemate.
