Glenvar Ladies win State Title 4-3 in a shootout over last year’s 2A State Champion Clarke County
2A Girls Soccer State Championship, Salem HS, Salem, VA– In an evenly matched state final game, the Lady Highlanders outpaced last year’s state champion, Clarke County, in a shoot out at the end. Two halves, and two overtimes couldn’t settle it, so it came down to single kicks in the shootout. Clarke County Senior Defender was the story in regulation preventing many good looks for the high powered Highlanders. On the other end of the field, it was Glenvar’s Freshman Goalie 13, Madelaine Frackelton backing up here Highlander defenders to perfection.
Frackelton was the final story in this one, forcing two Clarke County misses on goal in the shutout and then winning it on the offensive end, taking the last kick to provide the 4-3 winning margin. Head Coach Kyleigh Drew was excited after the big win, “A lot of people counted us out today. They said we couldn’t beat Clarke County. Our girls, like I said, are mentally strong. They were mentally prepared to come in here today to do what they needed to do.”
Glenvar was looking to avenge last year’s semifinal loss to Clarke, 6-0. That they did matching the Eagles all day long. Neither team cold dent the scoreboard in regulation, but Glenvar flipped the script in the shoot out.
Clarke Co Senior Forward 10 Summer Toone missed wide right. Glenvar Senior Midfielder 1 Campbell Hardin was good right bottom corner to make it 1-0. Clarke Co Junior Forward 22 Leah Mitchell tied it 1-1 going bottom right corner. Glenvar Freshman 3 Midfielder Sawyer Wilson was good lower left. Clarke Co Senior MF/Forward 4 Kelsey Elrod was good with her boot high in the middle to notch it again, 2-2. Glenvar Senior Defender 10 Megan Pomerleau was also good high center over the goalie. Clarke Co Senior Defender 17 Lillian Suling was stopped by Frackelton middle left to keep it 3-2 Highlanders. Glenvar Senior Forward 2 Giuliana Stanley’s boot was middle high. Clarke Co Senior MF/Forward 11 Madison Toone was good high right to make it 3-3. That set the stage for Frackelton on the last kick. The Freshman calmly came out of the net and nailed the game winner high middle, off Senior 00 Avery Shinaberry mitts for the exciting state championship final.
