Carroll County outguns Grundy 46-24 in Coach Seth Greer’s debut

Tommy Thompson Field, Hillsville, VA – It was about as good as it gets for first year Carroll County head coach Seth Greer. A win is what you’re after and the Carroll County graduate was glad to get it. Greer summed it up, “We were taking whatever we could get, whatever was there. That is kind of our thing. We’ll take what you give us. Find things here and there and hopefully break a big play out of it.”

Coach Greer got this first “W” with a great quarterback play, hard-nosed running, and timely big play receiving. Senior QB 3 Bryce Smoot led the Cavs with 173 yards on 16 carries for 4 touchdowns on the ground, while going 9/12, 166 yards and 2TDs passing.

His favorite target on the night was WR 11 Cole Ward who bagged 4 catches for 94 yards, collecting both TD grabs. They didn’t do it alone. The big Carroll County O-line blocked well all night long against a tough Grundy defense, and the Cavalier “tough when they had to be” defense bent but didn’t break.

They created wholes and Smoot, Sophomore RB 20 Ayden Dickerson (14/80, TD) and Junior RB 5 Landon Horton darted in, through and around them all night. The Cavs finished with 476 yards of total offense to 334 for the Golden Wave. Many of those runs were off of key blocks by H-Back 8 Mason Crockett. Crockett, a Senior, at 6’3, 237-lbs. is a formidable blocker. Defenders have to decide – take him on, guess right or left, but no matter your choice, the backs are advancing the ‘rock.’ 

Grundy has a good looking team. Typical Golden Wave group – tough, hard-nosed, and athletic in spots. The visitors were led by QB 1 Logan Lester with 15 Carries for 143 yards on the ground and 64 yards, and a TD passing. The Senior did suffer two interceptions on the night.

The other piston in that Golden Wave engine was RB/DB 11 Trey Taylor (13/101,TD rush; 56 yd TD rec). They were a handful, but Carroll County had big hands tonight. Carroll County (1-0) now has to ready for a rivalry game while Grundy (0-1) has Ridgeview at home. Coach Greer knows about the next challenge. “We’ve got a good team next week.
