Patrick Henry gets big plays in big win over Brookville 42-0
Merrill Gainer Field, Roanoke, VA – Patrick Henry showed up on all three levels against the Bee’s of Brookville Friday night to start the season. Stands filled on both sides for the anticipated matchup, and Patrick Henry and Brookville didn’t disappoint with some fireworks early. Patrick Henry Head Coach Alan Fiddler was happy with his team’s effort. “I thought it was a great start tonight. I really liked our enthusiasm, the way we ran the football… the kids played hard…”
On the game’s first play, Senior starting quarterback, QB/DL 17 Seth Shepherd tossed a short pass to fellow senior TE/LB 25 Carson Derey, who went 50 yards down the sideline. Shortly after, Junior RB/LB 23 Damarion Perdue punched it in on a strong run to put the Patriots up seven early. Both defenses played inspired early, forcing three and out’s, but the Patriots took advantage of great field position and Junior WR/DB 4 Cam Harriston broke off an electrifying 25-yard touchdown run to put Patrick Henry up 14-0. It didn’t stop there, Patriots RB/DL 9 Ra’qem Poindexter blocked a punt and the PH defense recovered it for another touchdown, 21-0.
The Patriots defense was especially strong early with multiple tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in “plus” territory right before halftime. PH’s Shepherd rumbled in for another touchdown pushing the margin to 28-0 going into the break. It didn’t get any better for the Bees at the start of the second half. Under heavy Patriot pressure, Senior QB 7 Lincoln McDaniel, threw an interception to Senior WR/DB 11 Elvis Yendeh. From there Pat RB 23 Perdue ran it in for his second touchdown of the night.
To Brookville’s credit, the Bees never gave up. Their defense turned PH over with an interception by Senior RB/LB 22 Jaiden Wooding. But in the end, the PH offense created too many big plays and players like RB/LB 1 Tyrae Zelrick’s made his presence felt with a 34-yard scamper to the 1 yard line. Backup QB/DB 8 Liam Rooney slithered in for another touchdown, which would prove to be the last score of the night making it 42-0.
Although the scoreboard didn’t reflect it, Brookville came out to play. Sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles and its just not your night. Patrick Henry on the other played well, but has a few things they need to improve upon. It was a very physical game that warranted a lot of laundry (penalty flags) on the field. Both teams will look to improve going into week two. – Chase Dorman
