Buffaloes stampede Pioneers in second half for a 47-12 road win

Fort Chiswell High School, Fort Chiswell, VA – Floyd County broke open a two score game in the second half with four second half scores, three in the third quarter. The Buffaloes put the ball in the hands of their QB and that was all they needed. Floyd County Coach Tim Cromer was high on his quarterback’s play. “He’s (QB 9 Sam Phillips) a heady player, smart, makes good decisions. He’s gotta a heckuva an arm, and can run it. We’re just glad to have him on our team.”

Phillips helped Floyd rack up 457 total yards to 133 for Fort. He carried the ball nine times for 122 yards and two TDs, and was 6/12, 163 yards with a TD toss and an interception passing. A good night against a solid defense.  Fort Chiswell had beaten Floyd County last year and the Buffaloes were out to try and erase that memory. The Pioneers, in front a big crowd, played well, but it wasn’t their night.

They were led by a RB 10 Ethan Martin (21/53,TD), and QB 9 Cam Alley (8/(-4),TD rush; 8/17, 88, INT pass) who collected both Pioneer scores. Floyd’s defense was key in this one. “We batted two passes tonight. We got an interception by a defensive lineman (DL 64 Ben Turpin), and then Phillip (DE 84 Phillip Radford) forced a fumble that led to our last touchdown. Those guys battled all night, and all of them go both ways on the O-line too,”  remarked Cromer. DL 64 Turpin’s INT on a tipped pass was cause for celebration among the ‘bigs’ especially. And DE 84 Radford’s forced fumble put the icing on top for the night. Big DL 77 Aiden Cox at 6’6, 273 lbs. also made his presence known as well as others on the line of scrimmage.

Coach Cromer had praise for Pioneer Coach Quesenberry and the Pioneers. ““They’re fundamentally sound defensively. They gave us some fits early, and then offensively they’re just tough to defend. I know they’ve had a couple losses but they’re going to win some games. It’s a big win

for us.”
