Glenvar’s Dawyot brothers combine for Big Plays, Defense shines in 40-0 win

Dwight Bogle Field, Roanoke, VA – Glenvar’s Dawyot brothers Juniors QB/DE 15 Brody Dawyot and WR/DB 7 Trey Dawyot opened up the first half with a pair of long touchdown passes that put the Highlanders up quickly.  Brody and Trey connected with an early 40-yard bomb to make it 7-0 Glenvar. Glenvar Coach Clifford talked about the combo after the game, “Trey is explosive, and Brody is just a heckuva player, and a great punter.”

Shortly after, Junior RB/LB/WR 1 Cooper Mullins scampered into the end zone from 17 yards out, extending Glenvar’s lead to 13-0. Cave Spring kept bringing the physicality on the ground, but after a punt by the Knights, the Dawyot connection was on display again. This time the pass covered 56 yards and registered Glenvar’s third touchdown of the first half.  The Knights continued to battle, but the stingy Highlander defense wouldn’t surrender points. The Highlander defense finished the night with 3 interceptions, and 4 TFLs.

Glenvar continued to move the ball and added another score to make it 27-0. WR/LB 11 Cale Vaughn hauled in a perfectly thrown lob pass from Dawyot from 25 yards out.  The visitors tacked on one more score just before half to make it 33-0. Knights head coach Hunter Shepherd thought the Knights played better in the second half. “The first half they punched us in the mouth. We didn’t play well early, but the second half they (his Knights) fought.” Cave held the Highlanders to seven points in the second half. RB/LB 0 Ranger Swanson ended the scoring for the night, late in the 4th quarter, to make the final score 40-0 Glenvar.

Coach Clifford summed it up well. “(Cave Spring) They’re a physical team. They have some good looking kids. They’re big and they did a good job of taking some things away. We executed in the passing game. I am proud of our O-line. We didn’t give up a sack.”     –  Chase Dorman
