Ospreys soar with four scores in first half in route to a 28-14 win

Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy, Moneta, VA –  Osprey Sophomore RB 22 Carter Garland (11/157, 3TDs) made the most of his carries, scoring the first two times he touched the ball, 58 and 11-yards respectively. Than put SML up 14-0 with 2:49 left in quarter one.  Coach Maciel was happy with his efforts. “He had his best running night tonight, hit the holes with some force, was able to break a few tackles and had some good, long runs.”

The Sophomore would add one more touchdown tally to his total three and a half minutes before the half. That up the Ospreys in control at 21-0. While their offense was running smoothly, their defense was stifling the Randolph-Henry Statesmen.

With 1:27 left until half, Coach Maciel faced a decision. Looking at 4th & 7 at Randolph-Henry’s thirty seven, Coach sent out his strong legged kicker, 37 Ethan Hahn, to try a 54-yarder. But due to not having the right guys on the field, just before the kick, he called time out. Hahn went through with the boot and it fell just short. Seeing that, Coach Maciel changed his mind and sent his offense back out to go for it. It turned out to be the right decision as Sophomore QB 23 Caleb Phillips found Senior WR 14 Branson Leduc-Mattox on a deep ball near the ten. The tall WR/S ,who is headed to William & Mary next year, gathered it in and twisted his way into the end zone to push the lead to 28-0 at the half.

The second half witnessed two Osprey drives thwarted by two turnovers. The first a fumble at the Statesmen’s nine and the other an interception by DL 54, Kaheim Dailey  on a deflected ball. For Randolph-Henry’s part, they put two TDs on the board in the final quarter. The first a 37-yard TD pass from QB 3 Jamere Gray to WR 1 Colton Mann.

The last score was a 10-yard run by RB 22 Aviaire Jennings with a minute left in the game. RB/LB 5 Cameron Sizemore was also a force all night for the Statesmen. There was a nice crowd on hand.  “It’s fantastic. You wouldn’t think that as small as a school as we are… it was a huge turnout,” remarked Maciel.      –  Cap’n Crunch
