Terriers all Bite, and Bark in 33-0 win over Christiansburg in Vinton
Robert A. Patterson Stadium, Jefferson Highfill Field, Vinton, VA – Last year’s battle between these two playoff teams was a nail biter with Byrd prevailing 14-10. This year wasn’t that as Byrd controlled the game and smothered the Blue Demons on defense to get a 33-0 victory.
The Terriers didn’t waste any time getting on the board, taking the opening kickoff and marching 56 yards for the score. QB 9 Cannin Lutz threw his first of two first quarter TD passes when he rolled left and found WR 44 Thomas Purcell for a 10-yd TD catch. K 35 Connor Whitehead added the PAT and the 7-0 lead quickly turned to a 9-0 advantage when the Blue Demons’ first series resulted in a safety due to a high snap on their punt attempt on 4th down.
Less than 4 minutes later, QB 9 Lutz connected with WR 1 Kameron McKee for a 13-yd score. The PAT was blocked, but the Terriers were now up 15-0 with 3:52 left in the first quarter.

Christiansburg’s offense put together an impressive second drive starting on their own 11 yard line and moving 71 yards to the Terrier’s 18. They did it all on the ground with QB 8 Izaiah Cotto, RB 14 Matt Annis and RB 4 Xavier Joplin taking turns carrying the rock 11 straight times. However, on the 12th play, Blue Demon QB 8 Cotto received heavy
pressure from the Terrier defensive line. His pass attempt across the middle was deflected and intercepted by Byrd LB #2 Jahdai English at the William Byrd 9-yard line.
Two plays later Terrier RB 4 Jamez Toler broke free for an 88-yard TD scamper and pushed the lead to 21-0 going into the half. The Terriers added two more rushing TDs in the second half, another one by RB 4 Toler in the third quarter and a 22-yard run by RB Jarret Shepherd in the final stanza.
After the game Terrier head coach Brad Lutz could tell his Terriers were ready for the challenge tonight, ”We still have a lot to work on, but he thought “it was the best week that we’ve had at practice, and I could tell in the first five minutes after the bell rang that our kids were ready to play tonight.” – The Machine
