Gretna’s aggressive play too much for Dan River 41-14
Gretna HS, Gretna, VA – Gretna’s offense started fast Friday night against cross county rival Dan River, but the Hawks defense may have been the star. Gretna outpaced the Wildcats 41-14, but both Dan River scores weren’t produced by their offense. One was a 59-yard, strip and score on a fumble, and the other a 65-yard kickoff return for a TD. Those weren’t on the defense.
“We came out today a little more focused than we had last week. Anytime you play your cross County rival (the Wildcats), you’re probably going to get their best game. The defense was flying around, causing turnovers,,” said Gretna Head Coach Shaun Miller.
Gretna started fast with QB Rayshaun Logan (9/21,169,3TDs passing) hitting WR 10 Xavier Waller on a 59-yard TD pass a minute into the game. The PAT was no good. RB 12 Khalil Waller (12/85,2TDs) made it 13-0 Hawks with a 23-yard TD run up the middle half way through the opening quarter. Dan RIver’s defense answered with DE 12 Denarion Robertson’s 59-yard fumble return to make it 13-7. But that was as close as it would get.
Gretna scored twice in the second quarter, a WR 8 DeMarin Hicks 49-yard TD reception from Logan and Khalil Waller’s second rushing TD of the night (10-yards). Dan River scored on Tyshaun Davis’ 65-yard kickoff return, but the Hawks closed the game out with two final scores to make it 41-14.

Coach Miller was complimentary of the Wildcats. “(Dan River RB 1) D.J Gregory has elite speed. They are big upfront, always are, but tonight I think we played pretty solid in all phases. Kudos to our defense.”. Gretna’s backfield was key as well. Logan at QB, RB 21 Derrick Tucker and 12 Khalil Waller keep the pressure on Dan River. Coach Miller was happy for those guys, “good to see those guys have a great night. – Cap’n Crunch
