Fighting Blues score 37 unanswered points to beat the Rockets 37-6
Craig County High School, New Castle, VA – On the first chilly night of this year’s high school season, Craig County’s offense went cold after taking a 6-0 lead to begin the contest. The visiting Fighting Blues of Parry McCluer, answered the Rockets first shot, and then followed that up with 37 unanswered points of their own.
The Blues ground game was on full display with their two quick backs, RB/DB 26 Jacob Shafer (15/195,2TDs) and RB/DB 24 Jackson Brockenbrough (17/59,TD) and they did some damage behind good line play. “They’re big, they beat us up front (tonight) and that hasn’t happened all year,” commented Craig County Head Coach Jimmy Fisher.
When the Blues weren’t using their “water-bug RB’s” for quick hitters, they were using their big back, FB 6 Jase Barger (10/71,TD), to show off some power football.
All told the Blues racked up 369 total yards to 148 for the Rockets. Craig County started fast, using seven plays, ending in RB/DB 16 Carter Calfee’s (11/69,TD) 17-yard TD run. The PAT was no good, and Craig Co led 6-0 at 8:48 of the first quarter. Parry McCluer tied it with 0:28 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard Brockenbrough run. Again the PAT was no good, leaving it 6-6.

The biggest play of the game came in the second quarter. The Blues, facing fourth and twenty eight, executed a flea flicker-pass play from QB/DB 8 Nathan Glass to WR/LB 11 Parker Snider to the Rocket’s one. Glass snuck it in from there for the 14-6 lead, after a Brockenbrough 2-point run.
“They’re big, they beat us up front (tonight) and that hasn’t happened all year,” commented Craig County Head Coach Jimmy Fisher

Parry McCluer took the opening second half kickoff and added to their lead. Shafer broke a 76-yard TD run up the middle at the 11:04 mark. Rocket RB/LB 32 Josh Craft (19/88 rush) blocked the PAT and it was 20-6. Craig County looked to close the gap but their 13 play drive was halted with a pair of fumbled snaps costing them 22 yards in total.
The Blues tallied three more scores, while the Rockets ‘snap woes’ stifled another promising drive in the final quarter. “We got down to the goal line and we’re going to run nothing but the ‘wedge.’ They couldn’t stop it, then our snaps stopped it,” said a frustrated Fisher. “They’re (Parry McCluer) a good football team, well coached.” – Cap’n Crunch
