Blacksburg gets 28-7 win over Hidden Valley with big second half

Bogle Field, Roanoke, VA – Blacksburg and Hidden Valley started slow, with both teams feeling out the other, and subsequently the first quarter ended 0-0. The Bruins got going in the second quarter, when QB 6 Sam Szefec hit TE 10 Kadien Deeb on a short pass to put Blacksburg up 7-0.

“I am really proud of them (the Bruins). We had success in a lot of different ways.”

– Blacksburg Head Coach Zack Leonard

Hidden Valley responded with a 20-yard TD pass from QB 11 Oliver Lichtenstein to WR 2 Japhon English, tying the game 7-7 in the second. It looked as if the Titans would take the lead before half, but the Blacksburg’s defense held Hidden Valley on downs inside the Bruins five yard line.

Not only did they stop the Titans, but the Bruins then went on a 97-yard march to paydirt. WR 7 Xavier Price took it in from 26-yards out with :10 seconds left to give Blacksburg the lead 14-7 at the break. “Our coaches did a good job calling plays on the drive. We were able to complete some passes and that got us moving,” said Blacksburg Head Coach Zack Leonard.

The second half went back and forth early on. Hidden Valley took the second half kickoff, but were eventually stopped on downs. Blacksburg gave it back a few plays later on Titan WR/DB 1 Hayden Crowder’s interception. Again, Hidden Valley drove it inside the Blacksburg five, and again they were denied.

This time Bruin WR/DB 2 Nate Means picked off the fourth down pass attempt, ending the wild third quarter. Blacksburg would extend their lead behind good running by Bruin RB 27 Jaxon Keys. QB 6 Szefec finished off drive with a 15-yard TD run. An interception would again thwart a Titan drive. This time TE/LB 10 Kadien Deeb got the ‘Pick.’

Keys added the nail in the coffin with a TD run in the final quarter to make it 28-7 Blacksburg. Bruins Coach Zack Leonard was happy to get the win. “I am really proud of them (the Bruins). We had success in a lot of different ways.” – Wilson Andrake
