Red Devils Run to 50-0 ‘Senior Night ‘ Win on Friday in Rustburg
City Stadium, Lynchburg, VA – With the power of Rustburg’s defense, power and speed on offense, the Red Devil’s secured a 50-0 win over Liberty on Senior Night.
“This is just another piece of the puzzle that will get the objective done.”– Rustburg Coach Dustin Russell
The night started with Rustburg honoring their seniors – football, cheer, band, golf, cross country and athletic training. L.C. Booth was also honored for 40 years of service, never missing a Red Devil’s Football game. Rustburg kicked off to get this one started. On the very first play from scrimmage, the Minutemen fumbled the snap and LB 44 Reed Dowdy jumped on it at the one-yard line.
One play later, Red Devil QB 8 Jaydon Herndon kept it up the middle for the first score of the night. Rustburg built a 30- 0 advantage over the first half. The Red Devils added to their advantage early in the second half. WR/DB 4 Alex Dunn brought the kickoff back to the Liberty 5-yard line. That led to another score for the home team.
Liberty finally began to move the ball in the 4th quarter, but still couldnt’ dent the scoreboard against the stingy Rustburg defense. On the night, the Red Devil’s held the Minutemen to only 26 yards rushing on 33 carriers, and 45 yards passing. The dominate play of the Red Devil defense surrendered only 8 first downs for the contest.
On the offensive side of the ledger, the Devil’s offense chartered 249 total yards, 228 of them coming on the ground. Eight different Rustburg players ran the ball on the night. After the game coach Russell said, “this is just another piece of the puzzle that will get the objective done. We have goals, and we will reach our goals,” he added. – Allen Bailey
