Altavista scores big in 73-18 win over Chatham at home
Altavista, VA- Altavista is currently the number 1 team in the state in Class 1A and they showed why Friday night. The Colonels have started every game this year fast and Friday night’s contest with Chatham proved to be no different.
“Our defense is pretty stout, but they had a quarterback who is very dangerous. Being able to contain him is a testament to what we do in practice. We practice hard and fast.”– Altavista Coach Matt DeLoach
The Colonels scored early on a pass from QB 9 Cooper Banks to WR/DB 3 Jamari Slayton and with the 2 point conversion led 8-0. Chatham answered back quickly. A 35-yard toss from QB 8 Amare Word to WR/CB 4 E.J. Linder. The 2 point try failed. Altavista led 8-6. That score didn’t hold up long. On the following kickoff, Colonel KR/RB/DB 6 JaCori Davis brought it back 87 yards for the score.
That set the wheels in motion for a big Altavista offensive night. The home team racked up 32 points to make it 32-6 in just the first quarter. Altavista would add four more TD’s in the 2nd quarter.
That was more than the Colonels would need in clinching the Dogwood District title and an unbeaten (10-0) regular season. Altavista Coach Matt DeLoach praised his defense against a tough challenge in Chatham. “Our defense is pretty stout, but they had a quarterback who is very dangerous. Being able to contain him is a testament to what we do in practice. We practice hard and fast.” – Wilson Andrake
