Grayson County defends and moves on in playoffs with 18-16 win
George Wythe High School, Wytheville, VA – On a night with all the winter elements present – snow, wind, and cold, the Blue Devils of Grayson County forced the big turnover in the second half for a ‘scoop and score’ that proved to be the difference.
The first half was highlighted by a 40-yard Grayson County TD pass from QB 4 Maverik Goad (4/16,92,TD pass; 9/34,TD rush) to RB 2 Aaron Peterson (8/12 rush; 1/40 rec), but the PAT was no good. George Wythe got on the board on a 6 yard TD run by RB 9 Kaden Irby (31/104,TD rush; 2/19 rec) with 3:07 left in the second quarter. The point after gave the Maroons a 7-6 lead mid way.
The Devils came out in the second half and did what they needed to do to move on in the playoffs. On the opening drive after halftime, Grayson drove the ball 77 yards for the go ahead score. QB 4 Maverik Goad finished it off with a 25-yard TD run up the middle. The two point try was denied. From there though the Blue Devils never surrendered the lead. On Wythe’s first play of the second half, it went the other way, literally. Irby was stripped of the football on the first running play and Blue Devil DB 1 David Mitchell scooped up the ball and darted 51 yards to put Grayson up 18-7 only two minutes into the second half. The 2 point try again was denied.
But Coach Brandon Harners’ Maroons never let up. Two series later the home team made it 16-10 on a K 19 Thomas Mitchell 21-yard field goal. Credit the Blue Devils though as George Wythe had it first and goal at the four, but couldn’t get it into the end zone. Grayson’s defense was the difference all night long. Wythe’s defense also played extremely well, holding Grayson County to 92 total yards and two first downs in the second half. RB 9 Irby was the workhorse for the Maroons all night, as their featured back.
RB 4 Trey Rainey (7/24) was slowed by an injury from the previous week’s game. Wythe made it interesting on a WR/DB 3 Brayden Rainey (2/24,TD rush; 3/72 rec) 1-yard run with 5:38 left in the game. The 2-point pass play was incomplete and Grayson held on to a tenuous 18-16 lead. Wythe would keep fans on the edge of their seats after forcing a Blue Devil fumble at their own twenty one.
QB 2 Mark Huff (12/26, 143 passing) hit WR 3 Brayden Rainey on fourth down for 45-yards down to the Devils twenty eight, but a short Irby run, and a short 1-yard pass reception, followed up by two incompletions ended the Maroon’s hope to advance. The final pass, into the wind was nearly brought in at the ten but Grayson DB 2 Peterson broke it up to preserve the win. – Crunch Staff
