Bulldogs stay unbeaten at home in 35-14 win over Heritage in Region Semifinals
Liberty Christian Academy, Lynchburg, VA – As it worked out, the most important win of the game might have been the coin toss. LCA won it and deferred. Heritage took the ball, but LCA chose the goal to defend. They took the wind, and there was some wind. “We deferred when we won the toss because we actually wanted to kick into the wind…and we thought that with the wind behind us, if early on we wanted to take a shot then the wind behind us could be beneficial, said LCA Coach Frank Rocco.”
“We wanted to control the ball, and keep it out of their hands.” – LCA Coach Frank Rocco
That paid off with a tough to handle kickoff which Heritage muffed and then barely made it out of their own end zone inside their own five. LCA forced a punt, into the win, and took over near midfield. A few plays later WR/LB 5 James Deyo (2/41,TD rush; 1/24,TD rec) bolted up the middle for the 37-yard TD run.
The Bulldogs added another ‘short field’ TD with RB/S 8 Gideon Davidson’s 9-yard run. Davidson jumped out of the way of a would be tackler, up the middle, showing off his athleticism. The Senior put Liberty Christian up 14-0 early in the second period. And once LCA gets a lead, they are hard to catch. Rocco laid out their thinking after the game, “We wanted to control the ball, and keep it out of their hands.” That’s how they went to half time with the Bulldogs up 14-0.
The Bulldogs added another Davidson TD in the third quarter from 8-yards out, and then QB 9 Tyler Jackson (3/10 rush; 2/5,45,TD pass) found Deyo on a 24-yard TD pass. Heritage finally got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard TD toss from QB 5 Ayden Slash (11/20,154,TD pass; 16/100,TD rush) to RB/LB 9 Brayden Morgan (4/5,34,TD rec) at the 8:44 mark to make it 28-7.
