Glenvar passes the test with a cold and windy 42-14 win over Floyd County
Highlander Field, Roanoke County, VA – While everyone else, probably across the state, was trying to stick to the ground game on a cold, windy night, Glenvar QB/DE/P 15 Brody Dawyot was not.
“Alot of people think you can’t throw in inclement weather, but if you are going to do this then you need to do it any kind of weather.”– Glenvar Coach Kevin Clifford
The Junior ‘gunslinging’ QB and his Highlander receivers were letting it rip. Dawyot hit WR/DB 8 Peyton Deel (6/76,3TDs) and WR/DB 6 Jace Forster (10/122,2TDs) from 32 and 10 yards out for TDs, respectively, to start the nights scoring. Glenvar Coach Clifford doesn’t shy away from the weather, “a lot of people think you can’t throw in inclement weather, but if you are going to do this then you need to do it any kind of weather.”
As prolific as Glenvar’s offense was, Floyd County kept it to a one score margin with 5:17 left in the half. Buffalo RB/DB 41 Joe March scored twice in quarter two, from 8 and 2-yards respectively. But Dawyot and the Green Team of pass catchers would not be slowed down. Dawyot teamed up with Forster (41 yd TD) and then Deel again from 11-yards out with only 11 ticks on the clock in the half. That really proved to be a backbreaker
The last second TD made the score 28-14 Highlanders at the break. But Glenvar wasn’t done yet. A minute and a half into the third quarter, Dawyot found Deel again on a four yard passing TD, 35-14 Glenvar. The final score of the night was a classic ‘Dawyot to Dawyot’ connection as Brody striped a 44-yard dart to his speedy brother, WR 7 Tre Dawyot (2/57,TD). QB 15 Dawyot finished the night 27/38, 329, 6TDs to get the 42-14 win. Clifford was complimentary of Floyd County. “I want to congratulate Floyd on a really good season, a tough season… they are very physical. They did a great job controlling the clock the first half. I thought we responded well. Our offense made plays. It’s hard beating someone once, but really hard beating someone twice. We are just excited to be in this position, this time of year. We get to play another week. It’s our fifth year in a row to be in the regional finals…just excited to get another opportunity. Just a blessing to be out here coaching and playing.”
Floyd County Coach Tim Cromer returned the compliment to Glenvar, “They are a very, very good football team. Tough to beat them right now. Coach (Clifford) does a good job, they are well coached.” Glenvar will now entertain Gretna next week. The Hawks were a 14-7 winner over Radford, last year’s Class 2A state champion. – Crunch Staff
