2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Graham rolls to sixth state title in 31-8 2A state championship over Strasburg
“(Going undefeated) That was our goal when we started, and we accomplished that goal.”-Graham Coach Tony Palmer
Salem Stadium Salem, Va – Graham got off to the perfect start against a tough Strasburg team and never looked back. The G-Men took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards on ten plays for the games first points – a two yard touchdown by the G-Men’s running QB 1 Gaby Lilly at the 6:45 mark.
Graham then benefitted from a Ram turnover on the ensuing kickoff. Five plays later, Graham’s passing QB 10 Dalton Roberts connected on a five yard TD pass to WR 22 Cambel Fix to put the G-Men up 14-0. And the Strasburg offense hadn’t even seen the field yet. “We didn’t get off to the best start – that’s on me, “ Strasburg Coach Trip Lamb said. “That’s a really good football team, and we were going to have to play really clean to beat them – and we didn’t do that.”
Graham added to it’s lead midway through the second quarter with a 27-yard field goal by K 12 Dylan Nash with 2:11 left in the half. But Graham wasn’t done. The G-Men defense held the Rams to a three and out, and then went back to work. Roberts connected with WR 6 Blake Graham for a 24-0 halftime lead with :45 seconds left in the half.
Strasburg regrouped at the half and started strong after the break. The Rams went 59 yards on 9 plays with RB/DB 7 Takhi Coates scoring on a 7-yard run and RB 17 Quincey Williams adding the 2 pointer to make it 24-8. But it was too little too late. Graham added a 45-yard Lilly run to put the G-Men 31-8 with 11:13 left in the game. It was a stalemate from there on out, but Graham didn’t need anymore points to lock up their sixth state title.
Strasburg hadn’t been to a title game in thirty years. The Rams are young and hope to be back next year. Graham Coach Tony Palmer put it plainly, “(Going undefeated) that was our goal when we started, and we accomplished that goal.” That they did. – Crunch Staff
