Varina jumps out early, defeats Fleming 41-14 in Roanoke on Friday

Miller Field, Roanoke, VA – The last time Varina played a game was in last year’s state championship, which they lost to Phoebus 23-6. They didn’t look like they needed to knock much dust off for this year as they beat William Fleming 41-14. The Blue Devils scored three times in the first eight minutes of the game to go up 21-0. Two TD passes by QB 3 Kaleb Wyche (15/19,252,4TDs pass; 3/18,TD) got Varina jumpstarted. The first an 86-yard perfect sideline bomb down the sidelines to WR 1 JaMari Carter (6/117,2TDs),
and the second for 26-yards over the middle to WR 13 Shanundre Williams (1/26,TD). The Varina defense got into the mix with a ‘pick 6’ by DB 7 Ivan Thompson at the 2:25 mark.
In the meantime, Fleming’s offense couldn’t get on track against the swarming Devil defense early on. Penalties and two turnovers that led to points that are hard to make up against a good team. The Colonels finally got something going on an 11-play drive ending in QB 4 Jycer Preston’s 7-yard run on fourth down up the middle.

The Blue Devils added one more score though on the last play of the first half. Wyche scrambled free and found WR 4 Trevon Rogers (6/72,TD rec) in the back of the end zone on a 25-yard dart. Varina led 41-7 at the break. Fleming RB/DB 2 Zhiy Steelman (14/63,TD) added a 7-yard TD run in the third quarter to close out the scoring.
