Colonels ‘go forth’ in 34-13 win over Salem at Miller Field Friday night

“It’s a good, solid win.  We’ve got some things we got to correct … but all fixable things. We came out victorious and that was the goal.  I am proud of our guys.” – William Fleming Coach Nick Leftwich

Miller Field, Roanoke, VA – The William Fleming Colonels hosted the Salem Spartans Friday on a perfect night for high school football.  Both teams scored with ease on their opening drives, and it looked like a shootout was in the air. The Colonels’ drive was highlighted by a 34-yard pass completion from QB 4 Jycer Preston  (9-11, 171 yds pass, 8/76 yds rush) to WR 17 Zion Baskerville and the rushing of RB/DB 2 Zhiy Steelman (13/117, 3 TD). Steelman’s 3-yard run capped the 67-yard drive to put William Fleming up 7-0.

The Spartan’s quickly responded with a 74 yard drive of their own. RB 21 Kyshead Arrington (14/92 yds) had a spectacular 35-yd TD run, braking numerous tackles and diving for the end zone and the game was quickly tied 7-7.

The Colonel’s continued to make the clutch plays as RB/DB 2 Steelman found the end zone from 1 yard out on a 4th and goal, and QB 4 Jycer Preston followed that up with a touchdown pass to WR 7 Dwayne Roberts (4/70 yds, TD) from 29 yards out on another TD on fourth down. This time the Colonels were looking at a 4th and 21. William Fleming took a 21-7 lead into the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, RB 2 Steelman got his thirdTD on the night  for the Colonels with a 19-yd touchdown run. RB 10 Jaden Robinson finished off Fleming’s scoring with a 23-yd scamper for the Colonels in the final quarter.

Salem rounded out the scoring for the Spartans with an 8-yd TD pass from QB 7 Grayson MacBrian to TE 3 Tolin Saul. After his team’s 34-13 victory, Colonel Coach Nick Leftwich said that “it’s a good, solid win.  We got some things we got to correct … but all fixable things. We came out victorious and that was the goal.  I am proud of our guys.”  –  The Machine
