Glenvar proves to be a difficult test through the air

Glenvar HS, Roanoke, VA –
Floyd County has had a tough row to hoe this Spring football season as far as opponents. The Buffaloes lost two close games to Carroll County (20-14) in week one and then Giles (20-18) in the second week, before thumping Alleghany last weekend. This fourth game,the hill to climb would be a little more daunting. The Buffaloes traveled down the mountain to Highlander stadium to take on Glenvar. Don’t let the Highlanders (1-2) record fool you. Glenvar’s schedule this year has also offered up

challenges in the form of Stuarts Draft (27-0), a state finalist last year, in a blizzard and the ever improving William Fleming Colonels (32-22) this pastTuesday. Floyd ran into another buzzsaw Saturday.
Glenvar jumped on the visitors early and the Highlander defense would never give the Buffaloes any room to score. Glenver won 34-0.

First Quarter –
The first quarter got rolling for Glenvar with two scores to jump out to a 14-0 lead. QB 4 Aiden Wolk found his big target WR/DE 44 Jebediah Sechrist on a 12-yard, fourth down toss into the endzone and the big man came up with it. The 6’6”, 275 pound Senior brought it down in a crowd. That got the Highlanders jumpstarted. QB 4 Wolk was at it again on Glenvar’s next series. This time the QB found WR _ Dagan Williams on a 47-yard pitch and catch down to the Floyd three. RB 2 Kyle Hanks did the honors from there making it 14-0 Highlanders.

Second Quarter –
Sechrist made it 21-0 with 5:43 left in the half on a 6-yard out into the endzone. The big Senior is just too much on a play on the ball for most defensive backs. RB 1 Jackie Swanson did most of the work to get the Highlanders into position for the TD. Swanson eight, six, and five.

Those runs sandwiched around a Wolk to TE 17 Gabe Shaffer seventeen yard pass put Coach Kevin Cliffords Highlanders in position. Floyd County wouldn’t help themselves out on the following kickoff. The Highlanders got the a Floyd fumble at the five and they were in business again. Two plays later RB 2 Hanks took it in up the middle for the score. The extra point made it 28-0 at the 4:58 mark. Glenvar tried to add to their lead but Buffaloe’s DB 42 Seth Dunbar picked off Wolk at the Floyd County twenty-three. The half ended with Glenvar up 28-0.

Third Quarter –
Floyd County forced a fumble in the third quarter to end another Highlander drive at their own thirty nine. Meanwhile the Glenvar defense was giving up some passing yards, 134 on the day, but no points. The Highlander defense also held Floyd County to 37 yards on 26 carries. That puts a lot of pressure on an offense to sustain drives and score points.

Fourth Quarter –
Glenvar added on more score in the final quarter. A twenty-eight yard pass to Colvin Delano from Wolk at the 10:36 mark. The extra point was no good and Glenvar had stretched their lead to 34-0.

Floyd County’s best opportunity to score came in the fourth quarter, but DB 12 Keith Couch was having none of it and eventually picked off QB 3 Jared Nichols near the goal line and then returned it nineteen yards out to the Highlander twenty four.

Glenvar (1-2) will now take on Radford (2-0) next Saturday. Floyd County (1-3) will be home on Friday night entertaining James River.

Altavista gets early lead, hangs on late to get win

William Campbell H.S., Naruna, VA –
The visiting Altavista Colonels jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first half and then had to weather a torrid, fourth quarter comeback by William Campbell to get the 29-22 win. Thirty seven points were put up on the board in the last quarter. Altavista took a 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter and then the fireworks started. Campbell actually gained their first lead of the game at 16-14 with 8:33 left in the final stanza but untimely penalties and good play by the Colonels allowed the visitors to continue to answer Campbell’s scores. Down seven, the Generals last ditch  effort had a chance in the left corner of the endzone but fell incomplete as time had already expired. Altavista Coach Andy Cox was happy with his teams ‘no quit’ mentality. “This is the first time that I’ve felt like we’ve been able to put almost four quarters together. There were no individuals out there tonight. It took the whole team, offense and defense, and special teams… I am proud of the guys.”

First Quarter –
Altavista looked like they would get the games first points in the first quarter. The Colonels had used sixteen plays to move the ball down to the Generals fourteen before the defense forced QB 1 Jayllen Jones to cough up the ball on a sack and DE 54 Zekeya ‘Popcorn’ Townes scooped it up and advanced it to their own thirty-five until he was tripped up from behind.

Second Quarter –
Altavista got it back on first and second drives of the second quarter. The first scoring march was a ten play drive highlighted by some hard running by RB 4 Marquel Dawkins. The final play was a 6-yard toss to WR/LB 6 Makel Stone at 5:34 to make it 6-0. The extra point was blocked. The Colonels added to their lead the next time they got the ball. The Altavista defense forced a General’s fumble at their own twenty nine. Five plays later Dawkins took it the balance of the way from twelve yards out. The visitors went for two and QB 1 Jones found TE/LB 12 Tanner Cox in the back of the end zone. Altavista’s lead was now 14-0.

William Campbell drove the ball back downfield before the half, but Altavista’s defense bowed up at their twenty-one and got the ball back as they held Campbell on downs. QB 2 Russell Thompson was sacked on the play. The half ended 6-0 Colonels.

Third Quarter –
The third quarter saw three drives, two of them stopped on downs. Both William Campbell and Altavista moved the ball but came up short as they attempted to go for it on fourth down. The Generals next drive would prove fruitful. It started in the third quarter but would finish in the fourth.

Fourth Quarter –
It took the Generals thirteen plays to finally break the seal on their nights scoring. RB 21 Perry Elam carried the ball ten times in the series, finishing it off from five yards out. The Senior would not be denied on the ensuing 2-point run cutting Altavista’s lead to 14-6 with 8:33 left in the game. Campbell then executed the perfect onside kick with WR/DB 1 Deshawn Hamlett recovering the bounding ball. QB 2 Thompson wasted little time hitting WR 4 Randy Crabtree all alone running down the middle of the field for the 42-yard scoring strike.

Campbell went for two again, handing the ball off to RB 21 Elam. The Back didn’t disappoint giving the Generals their first lead of the game. The home crowd loved the sudden burst of offense. It took Altavista only five plays to regain the lead three minutes later at 21-16. Starting QB 1 Jones had gotten dinged up on the kickoff return and was out. Enter Freshman QB 9 Jordan Pippin. The youngster handed off three times. On the fifth play, he faked a dive play, and kept it on a naked bootleg. He was the only one who thought that would happen and showed off his speed down the right sidelines in front of the William Campbell bench. Sixty five yards later, Altavista had the lead back. Coach Cox recognized the young mans efforts, “We had a Freshman step up when our Senior quarterback went down and he made a huge play for us.” Coach Danny Broggins kids weren’t done yet.

On the following kickoff, RB/LB 21 Elam took the kickoff and never slowed down. Elam rolled 85-yards to paydirt and gave the Generals the lead again 22-21. The two point try was no good this time.
Coach Andy Cox’s Altavista Colonels were not going to be denied this week. The Colonels, benefitting from a fifteen yard personal foul penalty, drove the ball 40-yards in two and a half minutes to retake the lead again.

QB 1 Jones returned to the game and took it in from a yard out with two and a half minutes left. RB 4 Dawkins and QB 1 Jones handled the ball exclusively. The biggest play was a 24-yard run by Dawkins from the Generals thirty three down to the nine. Four plays later Jones capped it off. Campbell moved the ball back downfield and had one last play to score from the Colonel’s thirteen, but the pass fell incomplete with zero’s on the clock. Coach Cox summed it up best for his team, “Coach Broggin’s got a great squad over there… has a good thing going over there. We’ve had two tough losses, battling back from 0-2. I couldn’t be prouder of the guys.”

Next up for Altavista is Appomattox. William Campbell will take on Nelson County.

Liberty Christian starts fast and closes the deal in 39-6 win

Liberty University, Lynchburg Va. – It’s not often that many high school teams get to play in as nice of a stadium as where the Lynchburg Flames play. But that’s the case when you take on Liberty Christian at home. The only problem for visitors is that more times than not, Coach Frank Rocco’s Bulldogs play pretty darn well there. That was the case again as the Jamar Lovelace led Colonels found themselves in a hornet’s nest on Saturday night. The Bulldog’s welcomed the Colonels to Lynchburg with a 92-yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown by the electric WR/DB 1 Jaylin Belford.

The Junior took it down the right has, bounced in outside and across the field at the Fleming forty and it was footrace from there. Sixteen seconds in. K/RB/LB 10 Caleb Davidson added the point after and and it was 7-0 LCA. At the end of the night, Liberty Christian beat the Colonels 39-6.

First Quarter –
Coach Lovelace’s troops settled down a little after the opening fireworks and actually looked pretty good on their first drive. But the Bulldog defense finally stopped the visitors near midfield and forced a punt. It looked like Liberty Christian would add to their lead on their first drive of the night as well. The Bulldogs drove the ball nearly the length of the field. Only an interception at the goal line of QB 7 Davis Lane by DB/QB 2 Dashawn Lewis ended the threat.

Fleming would struggle to move the ball out of the shadow of their own goal post. Forced to punt, RB/LB 5 Deuce Anderson was roughed on the punt and Fleming had knew life. That high wouldn’t last long as the Bulldog defense, would get the ball back. QB 2 Lewis threw an ill advised out near the Colonel forty and DB 2 Lantz Sears picked it off and returned it down to the two before being hauled down.

Second Quarter –
RB 10 Davidson burst through the middle of the line on first down for the 2-yard score. Davidson’s point after was wide left. LCA led 13-0 at the 10:14 mark. Liberty would add another touchdown just before half. The Bulldogs forced a Fleming punt and took over at the LCA forty-four. It took seven plays for Liberty to get six more on the board. The last toss was a well designed pass play from QB 7 Lane to TE 18 Dillon Stowers. The wideout ran a post over the middle and Stowers cut off his back to the corner pilon. The perfect throw from Lane made the catch and run of a couple yards an easy score. The heartbreaking part for the Colonels is that it came with only :04 left on the clock.

Third Quarter –
The beginning of the second half can sometimes offer up a new beginning, but even though Fleming got the ball to start the second half, their luck didn’t change. After a four and out series, LCA got a blocked punt this time without roughing the punter. After recovering the ball at the Fleming three, RB/LB 26 Cade Wycoff took it in straight up the middle. The extra point was wide again and LCA’s lead was 25-0. Fleming’s fate this night went from bad to worse when QB 2 Lewis was intercepted again by LB 26 Cade Wycoff. This was a play of plays as the outside linebacker, blitzing on the play leapt high into the air and snatched the ball ball like it was meant for him. RB 10 Davidson wasted no time getting into the endzone. On the very next play, he scampered twenty seven yards for the score. This time he finished off the scoring play as he made the extra point. LCA was now up 32-0.

Fleming would finally dent the scoreboard on a 30-yard QB 2 Lewis run right up the gut. Once the Junior cleared the line of scrimmage it was six points. The two point try to the corner of the endzone was incomplete. LCA was up 32-6. Liberty added one more touchdown to round out the scoring on the night at the end of the third quarter. RB 26 Wycoff took it in from eleven yards out finishing off a 77-yard, 11 play series with 1:13 left in the third.

Fourth Quarter –
The final quarter saw a lot of substitutions and consequently no scoring.

William Fleming (1-2) will be at home next Friday against William Byrd, while LCA will host Rustburg.
